Xbox One (commentary)
Posted May 21, 11:13 am by Naiboss

Off to a good start... I'm able to stream the broadcast without any hassle (unlike the PS4 announcement).

Initial clip suggests that the Xbox is going to be a more personal experience (more targeted ads?).

Don Mattrick takes the stage first, giving a background to the Xbox and Xbox Live, mentioning that more information will be available at E3.

Lots of fluff and buzz words...

And the name is.... Xbox One... and there is a video! Complete with shots of Kinect 2.0 and the new controller! WIN!

Already, in the opening minutes, Microsoft have trumped Sony with their reveal (in my opinion).  If they keep this pace up (especially if we get a release date and price) they can't lose.

That said, Kinect 2.0 looks pretty big... hope it's light.  The start up and log in is pretty smooth and I like the fact it remebers what I was last doing.  The interface is pretty similar and it's pretty damn quick as well... amazingly so when switching between different mediums (TV, Xbox, Music etc...).

The new hand gestures are also pretty swift. and using snap, like Windows 8, to have multiple thing open is awesome.

Skype on Xbox isn't much of a surprise, but running it snapped to one side while you're gaming or watching TV is. And the Xbox Guide looks great... assuming it works outside the US.

Fairly vague specs: 64bit CPU with 8 cores, 8Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD, Blu-Ray drive, WiFi Direct and 802.11n, USB 3.0.  No mention of the type of RAM or anything real specific but enough to say that they're happy to go toe-to-toe with the PS4.

The speed and multitasking is handled by three operating systems: Xbox, Windows and the third OS that works between the two.

New Kinect is far more powerful with a 1080p camera and able to recognise far more detail both visually and audibly, complete with more natural speech recognition.

The new controller is more of an evolution: Impact triggers, better D pad and included battery pack.

Lots of talk of connection and "The Cloud", giving the suggestion that MMOs are possible.

There will be a native Game DVR for recording your games, complete with editing tools, which is very cool.

EA have stepped up as a big launch partner with a new Madden, Fifa, NFL and UFC. all using their new engine, EA Sports Ignight.

Forza 5 was also announced (no real surprise there) by Turn10.

Remedy have revealled a new IP, Quantum Break. Not much shown, but looked pretty cool.

Apparently there will be 15 exclusive games in the first year. Eight of which are brand new IPs... but no real details (I guess they need to hold back something for E3).

More entertainment focus with a Halo TV series announced, being produced by Stephen Spielberg.

They also announced a partnership with NFL... I love American football but *yawn*

And the release date is... "Later this year"... Gah!

Big segment for Activision with Call of Duty: Ghosts. DLC for the game wiil be a timed exclusive on Xbox One.  New engine (at last) with leaning, sliding, dynamic MP maps, player-driven events, much better graphics, player customisation options. Dogs and a solid 60fps.

The console iteslf is rather like a shiny VHS player or a media-centre PC, but I've not really got an issue with that.

Wired.com have since got confirmation that games will need to be installed (no real surprise) and that the disks will not be needed after.  Games will also be linked to your account and there will be a fee to use that title on a second account which will have a huge impact on the second-hand market.

Strangely some people are claiming that the PS4 announcement was better?!? I understand th

at there wasn't much talk about the games... but wtf?!

It would also seem that the TV guide will be US only at launch.  The big thing now will be... how much?!
