E3 is almost over this year and it's normally around this time that I attempt to write about absolutely everything that has happened at the show... and then stop writing completely (often without publishing what I've written). So, this year, things are going to be a bit different; rather than write about every last game reveal and briefing, I'm going to talk about the games that interested me.
The star of the show, for me at least, has to be Cyberpunk 2077 by CD PROJEKT RED (creators of the amazing Witcher 3). Snuck in at the end of one of the briefings, the brief trailer properly introduced the world of Cyberpunk 2077 in spectactular fashion. Based on the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG game, the game sees you playing as a mercenary, V. Your character is very customisable, from gender and tatoos through to cybernetic implants, and is an RPG first and formost. It is also played in first-person, which is a departure from The Witcher's third-person view, something that has upset some elements of the Internet. Personally, as someone that has played (and is playing) the tabletop game, I'm really looking forward to it and the choice to use first-person sound awesome... just like Deus Ex or an Elder Scrolls game. From what they have said, the first-person perspective it really the only way to appreciate the verticality of the game and really immerse yourself in the world. There were some longer demos of the game behind closed doors, and everyone seems to agree that this is going to be an amazing RPG game. The trailer, if you've not seen it yet, is just below:
Bethesda revealed a number of titles, the main one being Fallout 76. While I'm a big fan of the Fallout series, so far I'm a little unsure about this one. It is a prequel to the other Fallout games and you play as one of the very first vault dwellers to surface, based in West Virginia... and it is also a multiplayer, online-only game with PvP. The information coming out of the show, as far as I can tell, isn't very clear just how the multiplayer impacts the game... since the initial reveal, there has been a lot of discussion about how building/crafting is a massive focus of the game and there is a story. Given that there are "dozens" of other players in your game, I'm not sure I like the idea that someone might be able to drop in a ruin my story experience or wreck my buildings... I guess we'll find out more as the release date, 14th November 2018, approaches.
Bethesda also revealed that Elder Scrolls 6 was being made... but other than a quick pan over some nice looking landscape, nothing else was discussed. This was alongside a new IP, Starfield, but, again, almost nothing was discussed.
They were also happy to show off some more of Rage 2, complete with a live performance from Andrew WK. I'm really looking forward to this as I loved the original game and have recently been playing through it again.
EA and Bioware were keen to show off Anthem and so far, I've liked the look of what was on show. Due to release next year on the 22nd February, it's looks like a lot of fun. With a large focus on customisation (and no loot boxes) it is difficult not to think that this is their answer to Destiny. If they can get the story right, it could be amazing.
I'm a huge fan of Spider-man, always have been, so I was excited to see more footage of Insomniac Games' new game. Lots of the villains were revealed alongside a ton of footage showing Spider-man zipping round New York City and a prison called, The Raft (shown in the trailer below). This is a must-buy for me.
After a little bit of trolling from Rod Ferusson, head of The Coalition, Gears 5 was revealed with Kait Diaz as the lead character. This, as you can imagine, triggered a small, noisy, section of the Internet complaining about playing as a woman. Gears of War 4 was great, so I'm looking forward to jumping back into the Gears world...
Ubisoft rolled out a new trailer, complete with new details and gameplay, for Beyond Good and Evil 2. It's looking great, and very ambitious, and is looking to incorporate artwork and designs from the public into their game... definitely one I'm going to be following.
The Division 2 was also on show, and looking great. I loved the original game and this one seems to build on everything they've learnt from the original game... another must-buy for me.
Other than that, there were a few other titles I liked the look of: Battlefield 5 is looking great, as is Assassin's Creed Odyssey (and I like their move to include more RPG elements); Just Cause 4 looks to introduce even more choas into the game (if that's even possible); Death Stranding is intriguing, and the Last of Us 2 is looking interesting...
There were plenty of other games on show, and I'm sure to have missed a few of interest so I may revisit this again soon. In the meantime, enjoy the trailers.
