Back in June I spent a LOT of time playing State of Decay, a zombie-survival open world XBLA title and loved it. The blend of management, gathering and action was an amazing balance with a fair amount of replayability. This month saw the release of the PC (at last) and once again, I've found myself spending a lot of time in Trumbull County.
Undead Labs took quite a brave move originally releasing the PC version as part of Steam's Early Access back in September. It came with a warning that it would still have crashes and, at the time of release, didn't even have a keyboard and mouse interface... like I said, brave.
I'm pleased to say that the game has survived the transition well. As someone that is lucky enough to have played it both on Xbox 360 and PC, it's easy to make the comparison; the great gameplay and mechanics are still there but with the added bonus of better resolution and graphics settings.
Playing with keyboard and mouse takes a bit of getting used to and you may wish to remap some of the keys to make life a little easier (full remap available soon with Update 4). While third-person games are generally well suited to playing with a controller, you will miss out on the accuracy using the mouse when shooting zombies.
With no changes to the core game or the existing story, owners of the XBLA version may not feel the extra graphical fidelity is worth the £14.99 price tag. New players with any interest in a zombie-filled third-person survival game, however, would be doing themselves an injustice if they missed out.
The first DLC for State of Decay, Breakdown, is also due for release on the 29th of November with the introduction of a more sandbox approach, new characters, new weapons and an ever increasing difficulty... we've played it and will be posting our thoughts soon!
Please note: While I personally purchased for the original XBLA version of State of Decay, Undead Labs were kind enough to provide the PC version, including DLC, for review.
