I recently bought Sonic Generations in the Steam sale, I haven't actually enjoyed a sonic game since Adventure 2..well Sonic advance was OK I guess. Now I haven't collected every ring or collectable, but I have had a play through and I thought I would share my thoughts.
About the Game: So this game marks Sonic's 20th Birthday so it makes sense that in the game all of the characters are enjoying a party for the spikey hero. Then all of a sudden time and space gets broken apart and everyone is swept up by a big spooky evil being. Sonic and Tails find them selves in a big empty white space where they meet up with the classic Sonic and Tails.
So when you are playing this game you will notice that there are no 'new' levels in the game at all, they are all re-jigged versions of levels from previous Sonic games. You need to play each level twice, once as modern Sonic and once as Classic Sonic. This allows you to experience each level both as it was intended and from a new perspective.
What I liked: I actually think the part of this game that really rocked my boat was the fact that you got to play levels from multiple perspectives. I think what I like most about it is just how well it has been done. Now with the exception of Adventure 2 I cannot say that I like 'modern Sonic' games very much but being able to tear through the green hill zone in 3D was pretty cool, likewise being chased by the truck in 'Escape the city' as classic sonic was just great!
speaking of 3D that brings me onto the next thing that I really liked about this game. Now 3D films are becoming the norm but Sonic generations has stereoscopic 3D built in and that's just something that you see in a lot of games (I am not counting nVidia 3D vision as that is an aftermarket thing)
What I didn't like: I was a little thrown by the fact that this Sonic game has broken away from the whole Act 1, 2 and boss thing. What you get instead was level 1 as modern Sonic and then again as Classic Sonic then level 2 and 3 etc...and then you return to the levels to complete challenges in order to gain boss keys, 3 keys and then you face the boss.
I can ultimately understand that this was done because Sega had more levels than they did bosses, but surely they could have brought back classic bosses too? oh well it was hardly a deal breaker for me.
Overall: Overall I think that this is just yet another Sonic game. You run about and collect rings. I feel that I won't be spoiling anything by saying that your overall objective is to collect the 7 Chaos Emeralds and defeat the final boss and then everything returns to normal - just like every other Sonic game ever...
That aside, I really did enjoy revisiting some of the older levels and playing them from a different angle did get rid of that 'Ive played this before' feeling.
