We all knew it would happen... we asked them not to do it... begged them even... but still they insisted that their game NEEDED an 'Always on' internet connection for their (essentially) single player game (what, like Diablo III NEEDED an 'always on' connection right?!).
And guess what? We were right.
It isn't even out in the UK yet but the US release appears to have been a mess. Untold numbers being held in queues of 30 minutes or more in order to play the game, if they are able to get in at all.
While I don't particularly like Metacritic or even adding scores for games (as you may have noticed), it's difficutly to ignore the number of negative user comments and scores for SimCity based purely on this one stupid decision (take a look here: http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/simcity?recent-sort=userscore).
While they have issued a rather weak apology, it does little to help those legitimate customers who are having issues.
And it's a real shame, because the game iteslf seems to be a real winner.
When will companies like EA and Blizzard learn that this level of DRM only hurts legitimate customers and, ultimately, them. Personally, I can't remember a single internet-only game launch (regardless of it being a single-player or MMO) that hasn't been plagued with problems.
At least Ubisoft seems to have learnt their lesson...
