Please note, this service shutting down only affects Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. The Wii U and 3DS will continue to function as normal.
Nintendo's WiFi connection service has been given a lot of grief since its launch, mainly for lack of features, but no one can really complain about something that is free!
The service will be terminated on May 20th 2014. Online features for Wii and DS will not be working past this date.
I first spotted the announcement on Nintendo's UK site: http://www.nintendo.co.uk/Wii/Get-Connected/Nintendo-Wi-Fi-Connection/Nintendo-Wi-Fi-Connection-626434.html and later confirmed it, along with a list of games affected on the Global site: http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/vyWpoM6CBIe6FjW8NIY7bvzOrgBURhzw
It is shame to see these services go down, especially for the all people still battling and trading on the Pokemon games...but at least the Nintendo DS and Wii will continue to work offline.
