About the Game:
What is Minecraft? ..It’s actually a very simple concept, you are in a world that is full of resources that you can mine and use to craft your creations. From that statement I would point out that the name is not all that creative but it does get the job done.
Minecraft is Java based and so is multiplatform and accessible for almost everyone. This has most likely helped with the games success..and it is VERY successful. To be perfectly honest I would be surprised if you haven’t at least heard of Minecraft before.
What I like:
It’s a weak argument when it comes to gaming, but I enjoy the simplicity of Minecraft. You mine, you build, you mine, you build. It couldn’t be simpler! There is no plot so you can dip in and out of this game as you please. The world you are in is also practically infinite (on PC/Mac) so if you are tired of an area or just fancy a change in game then you just pick a direction and toddle off.
I also like that there is actually just enough challenge in the game to keep you engaged. These challenges range from finding a particularly rare resource (namely diamond) or the mobs that will try and hinder you by eating your brains or sticking arrows in your knees.
My final plus point is the modding community. I don’t think I am being all that outrageous when I suggest that you will eventually get bored. The modding community for Minecraft is massive and there are even packages that throw hundreds of mods together to create an entirely different game. An example of such a mod pack is TEKKIT – with this pack installed, you are now in a world with even more resources, machines, computers, fuels and electricity. If the acquire and build theme is not your scene there are also mods like ‘Adventure Craft’ This mod actually adds objectives and dungeons etc to Minecraft. Modding certainly increases the games playability, which is great!
What I don’t like:
Ultimately there is only one thing I don’t like about Minecraft, and that is frustration there is a LOT of it. The things that will frustrate most people is falling down hidden holes into a pit of death, mining a diamond just for lava to poor in and burn your face off, mining down just to end up swimming in lava (NEVER mine down!), creepers in your house and trolls filling your basement with TNT.
I think that’s it. Other than rage brought on by the things above, Minecraft is a pleasant and relaxing experience.
Overall:
On the whole I think this is a great cheap game with a lot of hours of game play in it. It has all the things that a casual game needs to be good and more. Even if you don’t want to get your hands dirty, you can join one of many active communities and admire their handy work.
If you don't own it already, then head over to http://minecraft.net and buy it!
