I'm a huge fan of Counter-Strike... I've been playing it for as long as I remember and, alongside the original Unreal Tournament, it defined my love of FPS games.
Over the years, Valve have played around the with the formula that made Counter-Strike so popular. The changes haven't always been well received and you'll still find a lot of people playing the original... but it's never held Valve back. Their latest iteration, Global Offensive, is graphically and technically the most advanced version but is still missing a few of the much loved features (AS_Oilrig anyone?) but they are still not afraid to make sweeping changes to the formula.
Yesterday's update made some significant changes to hostage rescue maps in an attempt to make them more popular. Firstly with the ability to randomise the locations of the hostages (assuming the map supports it), being able to now carry the hostages to the rescue zone... and now you only need to rescue a single hostage in order for the counter-terrorists to win.
These alterations will make maps play very differently. Terrorists are going to have to keep a much closer eye on those hostages instead of running off to hunt down the counter-terrorists and even when the CTs do reach the hostages, it takes four seconds to get that hostage on your shoulders (unless you've bought a rescue kit, at which point it drops to just a second). Four seconds may not sound like a lot, but when a terrorist could turn up at any moment it'll feel like a lifetime (especially if you don't have any backup).
As someone that also dabbles in map making for Counter-Strike, it does mean that I'm going to have to take a good hard look at my map (SHAMELESS PLUG) in order to make sure that it still flows correctly and/or to add the new random spawn locations for hostage... but it's a small price to pay.
This patch also adds yet another, updated. classic map (one of my favourites), cs_militia, which has been well received so far.
