It's been a rough ride for Homefront: The Revolution; after THQ disappearing and selling the IP to Crytek; then on to Deep Silver and Koch Media when Crytek ran into financial difficulties to then get delayed into 2016 allow "every opportunity to turn [it] into a best-selling title."... you would be forgiven for thinking the title was destined to disappear. Fortunately, as their showing at this year's Gamescom has shown, the title is very much alive and kicking.
Leaving the linear nature of the previous title behind when it left THQ, the video below shows some similarities to other open world titles (like Far Cry 4) with areas/events being unlocked by taking certain facilities. It certainly has a very different feel to it and will hopefully provide the sort of urban guerrilla warfare that the title suggests.
Set in Philadelphia, four years after occupation and living in a police state, you are tasked with leading a resistance movement against a superior military force using guerrilla warfare to take back the city.
Will it be enough to compete with Ubisoft's upcoming open-world, urban warfare game, The Division, that is due for release in early 2016? So far The Division has shown some pretty impressive action, gadgets and environments... and Ubisoft certainly have a lot of experience with open-world games now, so you'd like to think they know what they are doing. Is there enough room for both to survive?
While you ponder that question, take a look at the gameplay footage of Homefront: The Revolution from Gamescom..
