Elder Scrolls Online also subscription-based
Posted Aug 21, 01:20 pm by Naiboss

Hot on the heals of Wildstar announcing that they will be going with a subscription-based business model, Elder Scrolls Online has done the same.

There is no news on any in-game way to extend your game time, like C.R.E.D.D. in Wildstar, and the pricing appears to be identical to almost every other subscription-based MMO.

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out with two of the biggest MMOs in development going back to how MMOs used to be funded given that the likes of Star Wars The Old Republic and Rift failed to work using the same model.  Interestingly, SWTOR reported a large increase in revenue once switching to the F2P model.

The key to the subscription model, according to both ESO and Wildstar, is going to be a constant flow of new content.  I hope it works out for them, but I can't help feeling that it's only a matter of time after release that one or both of these new MMOs feel the need to switch to a hybrid model.
