After a fair amount of hype, Bungie's new first person shooter has finally been revealed.
Set in a future where the arrival of an entity known as the Traveler heralded both a "Golden Age" for our civilization and an abrupt end to everything leaving realatively few survivors. Gathered in a newly created city beneath the Traveler, the survivors have just begun to explore our old worlds.
You play a Guardian of that city charged with defending the city and defeating it's enemies with access to incredible powers.
So... scifi setting, playing a powerful soldier against an alien enemy... it doesn't sound like Bungie has strayed too far from their comfort zone, but there is some potential there.
The video (below) certainly sells the idea well, and the official site lists a couple of features that make it sound more like an MMOG, possibly with free-to-play notions:
- Always connected universe filled with action and adventure
- Create your character, forge your legend by defeating powerful foes and earn unique and customisable weapons, gear and vehicle
- A variety of FPS gameplay including story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes combined with public and social activities
The social aspect seems equal parts interesting and terrifying as there's a suggestion that the game will keep it touch with you, updating you with missions etc... which sounds like a Zynga/EA Facebook stategy.
If I'm completely honest, I'm not personally a huge fan of the Halo series. It's done a lot of damage to the FPS genre with things like their fixed saved points and recharging health, Those two alone result in a very lazy environment to play, taking control away from the player. Sadly the Destiny reveal was rather heavily tainted by comments that Bungie co-founder, Jason Jones, made (reported by Destructoid). As well as proudly taking credit for introducing these elements to FPS games, Jones went on to claim that nobody plays first-person shooters with mouse and keyboard anymore. This particular comment seemed to anger a LOT of people, with many drawing comparasons with Cliffy B's "PC gaming is dead" comments (and we know how quickly he changed his tune).
Only time will tell... in the meantime, you'll find all the details here: Official Site
