So... last night was was the BAFTA Video Game awards and a number of high profile (and some not-so-high profile) games were looking to pick up an award (or three).

I've read a few complaints in the past about how the BAFTAs are awarded for films but I didn't quite expect the games to suffer... how on earth did Super Mario Galaxy come to win 'Best Game'?! Don't get me wrong, it's a great game but BEST game? Considering it was released in November 2007, can you really tell me that there have been no games released since then that could be considered better? Like the other nominated titles: Call of Duty 4? Fable II? Fallout 3? Grand Theft Auto IV? Rock Band? All inferior to Super Mario Galaxy? Grand Theft Auto IV alone has manage to sell more than 10 million copies and become one of the highest rated games of all time... if only Niko had been a plumber huh?

And the award for 'Story and Character'... Call of Duty 4. R-i-g-h-t... Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic game but I can't honestly claim that the story within is better than any of the other nominated titles (Assassin's Creed, Fable II, Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto IV and Mass Effect). Maybe they considered the sandbox environments of the majority of those games as detrimental to the story, who knows!

That's not to say that they got all the awards wrong. Action and Adventure went to Fable II, Gameplay went to Call of Duty 4, Multiplayer went to Left 4 Dead (which caused quite debate with one of my console-obsessed, Call of Duty 4 loving, staff) and Professor Layton and the Curious Village grabbing the Handheld category (great game).

So not an entire washout, but it could definitely do with a good shake.
