It's been a little while coming, and it's been desperately needed and wanted, but the patch for Battlefield 3 on the PC is finally going live tomorrow... but not without some last minute unhappiness from the players after the most recent post on the Battlefield Blog revealed that special "shortcut" bundles will be available for purchase that will immediately give the player purchasing it a number of unlocks that normally require hours of gaming to obtain. Three different bundles were announced, one to unlock all of the class unlocks, one for all of the vehicle unlocks and an "ultimate" bundle that is effectively both bundles in one easy-to-manage package.
While I can sort of understand their reasoning (creating a more balanced battlefield for new players), it does mean that with a little bit of cash, any player can suddenly have all of the toys they need to give them the edge almost forcing the rest of us to pay to keep up. Not everyone agrees, of course, but (for a specific example) just imaging everyone suddenly having mortars instead of just those players who have actually spent a significant amount of time 'earning' it by playing the support class? The potential for griefing is immense. It also, in my opinion, cheapens the game. Those unlocks no longer mean anything as it doesn't require any effort to actually get them, just some cash.
Perhaps it is simply the timing of these bundles. If we were a little be further down the line, when the average rank of active Battlefield 3 players had become significantly high to cause a real issue for new players, it would be a useful addition, injecting some new life into the game. At the moment, however, it just feels like EA/DICE getting greedy.
Personally, I'm also more than a little concerned about one of the other announcements made about the patch today... everyone is getting flares and dodging rockets is going to be easier?!?! It's nigh on impossible to take down an aircraft as an engineer as it is...
Trying hard not to make any judgements before I've had a chance to get the 1.6Gb patch and play a few rounds... but EA/DICE are making it difficult.
