It's been a little while since I mentioned Bungie's latest title, Destiny, but this week has seen a lot of new information appear and a number of hands-on previews so I thought it worth a revisit.
If you are unfamiliar with Destiny, you play a Guardian of the last city on Earth, exploring the ruins of our solar system and attempting to defeat Earth's enemies.
According to Bungie, the original creators of Halo, this is going to be "the next evolution of the first-person action genre that provides an unprecedented combination of storytelling, cooperation, competitive, and public gameplay, and personal activities that are all seemlessly woven into an expansive, persistent online world.". Sadly, all they seem to have shown so far is a relatively nice looking but run-of-the-mill, almost dull, sci-fi co-oprative shooter... and judging by the numerous preview articles, I'm not alone in this.
Obviously it is still relatively early days and perhaps more will be revealled in the coming months. The comments from Bungie about how their inovation is subtle, however, do give some cause for concern.
On a personal note, the fact that this is a console only release adds yet another issue. They claim that developing for Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One and PS4 is stretching them as far as they can go so they couldn't possibly manage PC as well... although having around 500 staff working on the game that seems a little unlikely. It's also odd given the recent resurgance of PC gaming with revenue now exceeding the consoles (Thanks MCV).
Hopefully more will come to light to show how Destiny is going to be "the next evolution of the first-person action genre" and Bungie will prove that they are more than just Halo.
In the meantime, check out the latest Destiny video:
